I’ve written about this before and I wanted to share this post about writing in longhand versus on the computer. I personally do not feel creative writing my blogs or my books on a computer looking at a screen. I need to have my pen in hand so it can glide along with the speed of my thoughts. It was refreshing for me to read this post by Moran Chaim and find that many others feel the same.
Do any of you prefer to write in longhand?

I don’t see composing text longhand or on the computer as an either-or proposition. I do both depending on my mood/preference/task at hand. Brainstorming, though, is mostly done longhand on a legal-size tablet.

I write notes longhand but when it comes to the writing I prefer the computer. A question of habit, I guess. 🙂

I find it sad that they don’t teach cursive anymore to our kids. I just wrote a much longer response,and lost it all! Arghhh.

And then just now the rest of my comment disappeared. I SAID… Though I feel a long hand note is nice to receive, I find it easier to write on my laptop. Obviously, i am challenged, commenting via my phone

I think it’s totally true that longhand connects better with your subconscious, and I do write short pieces longhand. But for a novel, it’s not realistic for me. Thanks for reblogging this & introducing me to Moran Chaim.:-)

The trouble is I cannot write anymore. I have some arthritis but last year, while on vacation, with no alternative but to scribble, I suffered through it and prayed later I could make out the scribbling. For the most part, I was successful. 😀

The fingers in my left hand have been stiffening the last couple weeks. It now hurts to type but I think it’s just a flare-up and will go away soon. (I hope).

I hope so Tess. Or else, what is left if you can’t write or type? Oh yes, there’s an option. My editor friend had lots of problems with her wrists last year and had surgery on one hand. She started using a program called ‘Dragon’ which is talking into text. Food for thought. 🙂

Oh no, thankfully I don’t have that problem (yet). I feel creative with pen and paper, not in front of a screen. I actually like it because when I’m done first draft and start entering in computer, it’s like first round of revisions. 🙂

I write notes in longhand but do the majority of my work on the computer. I actually don’t find the computer hinders my creativity. I type faster than I write by hand so the keyboard can keep up with me better than the pen 🙂

That’s interesting Christy. I also type fast (when my long nails are clicking the wrong buttons), but I find the pen keeps up better for me. Then my first round revisions begin while I’m entering into the computer. 🙂

I do write notes, ideas and Sometimes chapters in long hand. But most of my writing is done on the computer. My hands hurt when I write too much in long hand.
I don’t know how you do it but I give you lots of credit. I did write a children’s book in long hand. Yes that was before I had the computer. I really need to publish that book, lol.. 🙂

It’s interesting to find out other writer’s habits. And yes, although it may seem like more work after first draft is done, it becomes like first round revisions while I’m typing it into the computer. What gets entered is never what was on the paper. 🙂 And children’s book???? Now get on that my friend! xo 🙂

I used to “get something back from it” writing in longhand. However, a few years ago i had an injury to my right wrist/hand, so now it’s more of an effort, and i like the computer better. Otherwise I would agree with you completely. Hugs. 🙂
