“Click To Tweet” – Are you using it?

click tweetYou may have noticed on some blogs you’ve been reading, a ‘click to tweet’ box or birdie within the blog post. You can add these to your posts by highlighting a sentence or quote from within your blog post, and placing it in the ‘click to tweet’ generator. You will also have to copy and paste in the permalink URL to that blog post, plus your Twitter handle, then click ‘generate new URL’. You can then embed the newly generated link into your post to make it a tweetable Twitter share.

 Readers will now be able to click an eye-catching sentence to be tweeted into the Twitterverse and be shared, bringing you more traffic to your blog. It also enables your name to remain attached to the tweet, no matter how many times it gets shared from others, again to redirect readers to your blog when clicked on. So don’t forget to add your Twitter name.

Alternatively, you can add a #clicktotweet plugin, which will install the little ‘birdie’ in your editing tool bar. You  click on the birdie in your editor when creating a post, after placing the box in the spot you’d like it to show in your post, and add the highlighted quote or words you want to go inside the box to tweet,  then click on the generate button  and the link is automatically installed in coded text. Then ‘save’ draft, and hit ‘preview’ and click on it to test it out.

 

Plugins are available in your ‘Plugins’  widget of your dashboard. Just type in the search box ‘click to tweet’ and you’ll find several plugins available. Read the details before installing to make sure that particular plugin is compatible with your blog.

This little beauty can also be used to add links to your books and more with the link generator. The possibilities are endless.

  1. Good info, Debby. I’m not using this yet. I’m usually about 6 months behind on technology for some reason. I think because it’s intimidating after all the years of things blowing up on me. You’re making me braver though 🙂

      2. Yes, he does a lot of research and always shares. Then when I find something I’d be interested it, I also explore before jumping in. When I’m satisfied in my own knowledge, I then share my discoveries here too. 🙂

    1. Yes Colleen. Go to your dashboard and click on plugins. Look at your list of plugins. Check if it’s there in your list, possibly ‘unactivated’. If not, click on the search box and enter ‘click to tweet’, and you should get a list of them to choose from. Always read the details, and that it says ‘compatible with your version of wordpress’. 🙂 Let me know! 🙂

      4. Colleen? In your dashboard where it lists tools, settings, appearances, there should be plugins. If you don’t see that specifically, look in your tools, or appearance settings. There is a page that lists what plugins are installed, ie: your share buttons, those are part of plugins.
        I used to be on WordPress.com, but I’m self hosted now on .org. Still you have control in your dashboard. Look again, lol. 🙂

      6. I’m confused? Your website ends in ‘wordpress.com’ that is free site. Self hosted sites (like mine) are through wordpress.org, even though the Url ends in .com, no wordpress.com?

      14. I just sent you what shows up in my comments from your website. And yet when I go to your blog, it says Silverthreading.com. Did you move over yourself, or did you have help, or a website host whom you’re paying?

  3. Hi Deb.. I have a twitter share button upon my blog, but I do not hold an account myself.. 🙂 too many little birdies flying around as it is LOL.. xxx But that is a great idea to highlight a quote.. 🙂 oh and I am getting ajusted to 10.. 🙂

    1. So great to hear Sue! Yes Sue, I usually do share your posts on Twitter with your share button. But without you having a name added at the end of the shared tweet, you wouldn’t know it was shared, thus no credit to you, but hopefully if read they will click on and visit your blog.
      If you join Twitter, you will get an account with a name you choose, and then people will follow you, and vice versa, and you would go to your profile settings in your WP dashboard where it asks you to enter your Twitter handle (name) then whenever someone shares your posts, you get the credit, and gain followers from those who like and retweet your work into the universe. It’s a win, win.
      I know it’s a lot to think about, but when you get there, feel free to ask me whatever I can help you with. ❤

Colleen, here is a link I found for you http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-add-click-to-tweet-boxes-in-your-wordpress-posts/ Also, bear in mind, if you find the tweet box process too overwhelming, simply use my first method of highlighting the sentence you want tweeted and copying into the tweet box at http://www.clicktotweet, then generate a new URL and go back to your draft and highlighted sentence, create a link and add that new URL in it. Then when someone clicks on it, it will be tweetable.

  7. I’ve seen these ‘Click to Tweets’ and would love to use them, but reading down the comments here, I seem to be the same as Colleen in that I don’t have a ‘plugins’ bar on my dashboard. I pay for a premium updgrade for my own domain – sherrimatthewsblog.com – but I don’t think plugins are included. But I do have the Twitter sharing button with my Twitter handle attached (as you know, thanks to your always generous sharing!) so I’m guessing that’s all I can do for now? I took a look at the video clip you linked to (thank you Deb, you are always so helpful!), and that’s when I reaslised about the missing plugins button. Maybe I would have to go self-hosted to get that? Looking forward to discussing…you’re a star Deb!! 🙂 ❤ xoxo

    1. Yes, Sher, Colleen and I resolved her dilemma. Even though she bought the premium upgrade and her own domain name (like you), she is not self-hosted yet. So in that case, if you don’t have the option to add the plugin, you could use method 1. You won’t get the ‘click to tweet box’, but you can highlight text you want to stand out, open a 2nd tab and go to http://www.clicktotweet.com , and paste that text, as well as the highlighted ‘perma link URL’ from the blog post, and add via (your twitter name) in that tweet generator box. You will then be given a new Url. With that Url, you can then highlight that sentence again in your blog draft, and create a link (as you normally do) and in the link box, add the Url you just generated. Now, when readers click that highlighted sentence, the twitter box will come up for them to tweet with the highlighted sentence as the focus of the tweet. Did you try the version I put on this post? When you click on, ‘clicktotweet’, you will see the tweet ready to share. Let me know if I’ve explained well enough. 🙂 xoxo ❤

  8. I have seen this on many blogs, mostly those that are self-hosted. Never knew you could add it on WP dot com, or I would have. BUT, I self-hosted in May and click to Tweet was one of my first plug ins! Love it. Great post and I tweeted!!

  9. I tried Twitter for a day but it’s just TOO much. Do you suppose I will get any benefit from a click to tweet anyway (i.e., a link back to my blog site via an additional route from people who DO tweet?)

    1. Hi John. You would still benefit, especially if you still have your twitter account. If you do still have a twitter name, hook it up with your twitter ‘share’ button on your blog by adding your twitter handle. If not, the tweet will go off with ‘@wordpress.com’ . The way you would benefit is whoever tweets it, it goes in their feed for their followers to see, and those people may want to click on it and be brought over to your blog.

      1. Yeah, probably should try using it. But I can’t see making use of my dormant twitter account. It’s hard enough getting anything done now; if I had to contend with twitter I’d be useless. LOL.

      2. I hear you John. But keep in mind, even if you aren’t active on Twitter and have the account, any tweets sent out from your posts, still drive traffic to your blog from those who click on the link. Food for thought lol. 🙂

      1. Ummmmm no. Not because I don’t want to, but because I am focused on meeting book finishing deadline. Once I have cleared my brain bandwidth I will refocus on learning new stuff. I DOOOO want to do it though. I bet you saw a heap more tweets. I found I couldn’t scroll pass it, I just had to tweet! lol

      2. Lol, it’s kinda large. But I hear you. There’s only so much our brains can multi-task. That’s why I love Evernote, where I keep all my bookmarked articles for easy referencing. 🙂
