Sunday Book Review – The Body in the Snow – Christoph Fischer

Book reviews by D.G. Kaye

Today’s review is on another book I recently read from by a friend an author whose books I enjoy very much, Christoph Fischer’s , The Body in the Snow. Christoph is known for his writing in the historical fiction genre and dived into a new genre with this book, a cozy mystery, which I thoroughly enjoyed!

Blurb:

Fading celebrity Bebe Bollinger is on the wrong side of fifty and dreaming of a return to the limelight. When a TV show offers the chance of a comeback, Bebe grabs it with both hands – not even a lazy agent, her embarrassing daughter, irritating neighbours or a catastrophic snowfall will derail her moment of glory. But when a body is found in her sleepy Welsh hamlet, scandal threatens.
Detective Sergeant Beth Cooper has a string of unsolved cases to her name. Her girlfriend left her and she’s a fish out of water in rural West Wales. Things couldn’t get much worse – until the case of the Body in The Snow lands in her lap.

Can Beth solve the case and save her career and can Bebe make her comeback? All will be revealed in this light-hearted, cosy murder mystery by best-selling and award winning historical and crime fiction novelist Christoph Fischer.

My 5 Star Review:

I found this book a thoroughly entertaining read with characters who we can both, love and some we’ll want to smack.

This delightful and sometimes comical whodunit will keep you guessing to the very end. We get to know the players who reside in this cozy hamlet when a huge snowstorm hits, and the normally unfriendly among each other neighbors come together when in need of the necessities of a power outage such as – food, heat, and sometimes just for company.

The clash in characters makes for an interesting story. There’s Bebe, the aging singer trying to make a comeback, when her plans go awry due to the storm, Dora the happy divorcee who is carefree and kind and has no shame parading around her garden in her nightie, and Ian, the helpful neighbor who is married to the neighborhood busybody and watchdog, Christine. These neighbors are brought together when they become suspects of the body found in the snow, a murder victim found on Ian and Christine’s front driveway. This comical romp of shenanigans and investigation will keep you reading with curiosity and hoping that Bebe still gets her last shot at renewed stardom. A fun read!

  1. Hi Debby – That sounds like an entertaining read and I do enjoy a cosy mystery, especially one set in the UK. I shall grab a copy this week, ready for my next trip.

    1. Lol John. Not fast enough. I only read at bedtime, that could give me anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours depending how tired I am, lol. So usually takes me 2 weeks or so to finish a book. But I did manage to read 6 or 7 books while on vacation! 🙂

    1. Oh Diana, I could have written your comment – especially the part about the dreaded TBR list. I just finished Gone Girl (a different sort of a mystery genre book, I suppose), but I’m not getting through my pile nearly as quickly as I’d like, and my list grows longer as I sleep, I believe. (It’s all that pesky neuroscience that creates the logjam!)

Sounds like a fun read, Debby, Thanks for sharing your impressions – and I love Christophe’s blog so I’m sure this book belongs on my list as well.

      1. Thanks Madelyn. We all know about the big fat TBR that will never seem to lose weight because as soon as we devour one book we’ve added yet another.
I love Christoph’s books, read quite a few of them. This was a different genre for him to jump into and I was curious to see what he did with it. I admire authors who are versatile and can write in different genres. I can’t see me writing fiction. 🙂 xx

      2. Lol. I said that too, and don’t ask. But my Kindle, well, that’s another story, bursting at the seems in an undending amount of virtual bookshelf space. 🙂

      3. It’s a cloud, so it’s unlimited storage. Truly a beautiful thing! Merely the few ounces the Kindle weighs carries the load of many books! Plus ebooks are so much cheaper. Plus, not only can you add books, but there’s an app ‘send to kindle’ where you can download to your computer and also send any documents, pdf’s, etc. to the Kindle also. 🙂

  2. I do like the occasional cozy mystery. Or, rather, I occasionally like the cozy mystery. Wait… I read these some…never mind. Also, I have two people in my life who I think would love this. 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation, Debby. Off to check it out (and get some gifts).

    1. Thanks Marsha. These days I’m not reading a book a week either, but when I started this reviewing book posts, I had already read many that I hadn’t reviewed here. Plus while I was away in the winter, it gave me a chance to catch up on reading more books. 🙂

      1. Good for you. I read a few on the plane to Australia. Since I got back, I’ve been running. We have so many events in the late winter, early spring.

  3. I’ve read some of Christoph’s books, Debby, and they are fabulous but I haven’t caught up with this one yet. Thanks for a wonderful review and the reminder!

    1. LOl Norah, I’m with you on that question, but I think as far as that statement goes in relation to Bebe, she feels her career is on its way to finished because of her age, so it relates to her profession. 🙂

    1. Thanks for visiting Christy. It’s hard to be disappointed by any book from Christoph and it was especially fun reading this book because it was out of the box in a different genre for him, which he did an excellent job of. 🙂

    1. Thank you Balroop. Lol, I’m not that fast a reader. I read about 2 books a month, only at bedtime. Then I review them and draft them in post for my Sunday reviews. I do get to catch up more on vacation, like this past winter where I got to read 8 extra books. And speaking of reviews, yours is up this coming Sunday.
BTW, I friended you today on FB because I went to message you and I thought for some reason we were already connected there. When you accept, I’ll message you. 🙂

  4. I just learned about cozy mysteries a few years ago and this one sounds just delightful. Congratulations, Christoph and thank you, Debby for introducing me to him and his wonderful collection of tales. Much continued success to the both of you.

    1. Thanks so much Ann. I love Christoph’s books, mostly historical fiction, but this book is a different spin for him writing in this genre and he did a wonderful job. 🙂
