Sunday Book Review – Talking to Heaven by James Van Praagh

Welcome to my Sunday Book Review. As many of you already know, my reading interest since my husband’s passing is solely being hungry for books about getting through the grieving journey, as well as books about the hereafter. Talking to Heaven was a beautiful book, giving a deeper understanding to what goes on with the transition of death to the next realm.

Blurb:

James Van Praagh is a spiritual medium—someone who is able to bridge the physical and spiritual worlds. Though unaware of his gifts until his twenties, he slowly came to terms with his unique abilities. Talking to Heaven explores his most revealing sessions with grieving people seeking to contact the spirits of loved ones. From a devastated mother receiving a message of hope from her deceased little girl, to communicating with a young man, killed in Vietnam, who doesn’t realize he’s dead, Van Praagh affirms his belief in the existence of a peaceful afterlife. Talking to Heaven also offers those who are grieving methods to recognize and positively deal with the pain of grief in a healthy, honest manner.

Part spiritual memoir, part case study, part instrumental guide, Talking to Heaven will change the way you perceive death and life.

My 5 Star Review:

Medium James Van Praagh is a well-known psychic medium who writes in this book about his live experiences doing readings for people wanting to connect with lost loved ones.

He shares how he introduces himself to each client by sharing incidence in the client’s life that nobody else would never even know. Using examples of stories of his encounters with spirit, he shares how he receives his information and how he feels what the deceased experienced as their death.

For anyone curious to learn what happens to spirit on the other side after life, this book is a calming and informing about how our loved ones who’ve passed may be gone from their earthly life, but remain around us for the rest of ours. Praagh also tells us the same about our loved and lost pets and how they still come round and hang out in their favorite spots from their earthly life.

Praagh goes into the chakras and meditations that help to open us up and allow us to go deeper into ourselves, teaching us with guided meditations how we can connect on another realm with a lost loved one, something I certainly hope I will eventually be able to do.

In this book, the author shares a lot about himself, detailing how he came to be a psychic medium through his own experiences, as well as sharing many experiences others have encountered with lost love ones from the other side with his assistance. Stories of hope for others to learn how to connect and understand better, the hereafter.

  1. I’ve always been into spiritualism, and have often read that if we can learn to clear our minds through meditation then connecting with the spirit world might be possible. I’ve never been able to clear my mind for long enough though, lol. x

  2. This is an interesting sounding book, Debbie. It reminds me a bit of Finding David by Stevie Turner, although that book is fictional.

  3. I’ve been reading more “spirtuality” based books lately also Debby. James’ book sounds enticing. Have you been able to get a session with him? A good friend called me last week and said “You have to read Testimony of Light.” So I bought it and am slowly reading it a chapter at a time early in the mornings. So many mediums/psychics say the same thing about looking for the Light within us, and finding peace/light/loved ones through our own peace (helped with mediating) that I feel there’s lots of truth in there.

  4. I firmly believe that in some way those who have passed keep a channel open to us in one way or another. Sounds like a fascinating book Debby… and one well worth exploring to get a better understanding of how this channel can be opened. hugsx♥

    1. The terms of my loss have a mixed bag of issues I can’t get past. But it’s a better understanding of what happens to souls in the hereafter. 🙂

  7. What an interesting book, Debby. I can imagine that this book brings peace, though for me it comes with a certain amount of longing… to know that loved ones aren’t gone and that they’re truly at peace with their transition. I want that assurance… personally! 😀 Thanks for sharing your reads as you navigate your way through grief. You’re and inspiration. Hugs.

He has some super videos up on YouTube too. It’s all a loving energy and that is how spirit communicates and we channel with them. Wrapping you in much love, always, softly. ❤ Xxx ❤ ❤

  9. Debby,
I have read many of these kinds of books and have received many messages from deceased loved ones! After my father’s death, whe I was five, I started having connections with him. Although, it scared the you know what out of me. I shut the ability down and then it re-opened when I was fifteen, after another close family member died. I remember after my Mom’s death. I felt very disappointed because I wasn’t communicating with her as I wanted to. It was my grief, which blocked me. As time went on, I received the most messages when I wasn’t trying because I was relaxed and open.
    Many Blessings
    Lisa xoxo

    1. Thank you so much for sharing that here Lisa. And you aren’t the first that mentioned trouble communicating. I will take heed in your words and await the gifts that will come. Thanks for the inspiration and hope. ❤ xxx

  10. Debby, this is a book I want to read. I sometimes go on channels on YouTube to connect and meditate with my spirit guides. There is so much that we don’t know and I find it comforting to be guided by them – even if it’s simply to help me write a scene in a book I’m working on. I think as we get older and are faced with great losses, as you are today, we are offered opportunities to grow and to trust in our inner being. I believe that it is no coincidence that Talking To Heaven was placed in your hands.
Take care, dear friend. xxx ❤

  11. It sounds like a book that was a comfort to you at this time, Debs and which also left you with questions…I was always a sceptic and then a good 30 years ago I went to a reading…that lady told me a couple of things that no one could have known ..a broken necklace I had of my grandmothers was one and she described it exactly and that the clasp was broken..other things came true quite quickly the final thing came true since we have lived here all those years later I had lived in the house for a few months a beautiful house…my dream home…we couldn’t believe our luck…The street names obviously are in Thai and I asked for a translation…It was Waterfall Road…this psychic had told me she could see a house …the house of our dreams and she knew it had water in the name and that it didn’t cost us very much but she couldn’t see how or why…That was the last piece of the puzzle and it fell in place…At the time I knew she was special how special I know for certain now…xxx

  12. Sorry, I’m late to this party, but have to chime in. I am a fan of James Van Praagh’s work but have not read this book yet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. I see several comments about the difficulty of clearing your mind in meditation to receive messages and connect with Spirit. The trick I’ve found (and I’ve been practicing meditation for almost 50 years) is to become an observer and disconnect from the thoughts rather than trying to eliminate them. That’s my tip for the day. 🙂 Hugs!

    1. Jan, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your helpful words. My problem is I never learned how to turn off the ‘noise’. I will practice til I get good at this meditation business. 🙂 And so happy I could introduce you to this book of Praagh’s. No doubts you will enjoy it. 🙂 ❤

  13. The communications will come and they can be quite glorious. One of the more unexpected ones I received from my Mom was a full body apparition of her sitting in my parked car! My husband took a picture of her. It was and still is incredible. Sending you much love, Lisa xoxo

    1. Oh wow Lisa, how amazing that moment must have been to see your mom again if only as an apparition. And the fact that your husband took a photo is astounding. Often, only the one who has lost the loved one can see the spirit. Did the photo actually show up after taken? ❤ Hugs for sharing yourself. xox

  14. This is not a topic I would read about usually, Debby, but I am happy to know you find it helpful at this moment in time. I hope things are getting slowly more bearable. Take care and all the best.

  15. Interesting recommendation. I’ve had some amazing experiences with spirit mediums and psychics. While I’m not totally sure about it, I’m certainly very open.
Sounds like an interesting and important read for you right now.
    Much love

  16. I can imagine that a better understanding of the afterlife helps right now, Debby. Anything that can get you closer to your hubby – spiritually at this point – is beneficial. While I’m sceptical about mediums and psychics, I am equally as curious. I’ve never had a reading done and part of the reason why is probably fear… Part of me doesn’t want to know or anticipate the future.

Like yours, my head can never be quiet, so meditating is impossible for me, unless I would put more effort or practice in it. Not sure when that will happen…

    1. Lol, refreshing to learn there’s someone else who struggles with meditation 🙂 I used to get readings done in my younger years. Like you, I prefer not to know these days ❤
