Welcome to my Sunday Book Review. Today I’m reviewing international Medium, James Van Praagh’s, Ghosts Among Us. If you are at all curious about the ‘afterlife’ and what is entailed on the other side, Praagh’s book is helpful to help understand how life works ‘on the other side’.

Medium James Van Praagh first invites us into glimpses of his life by sharing his young life and his first encounters with other worldly spirits; he thought his calling was to the priesthood, his later realization was that’s not where he belonged, and his journey through writing, moving to Los Angeles, connections and seances, were the beginnings of Praagh’s becoming a famous medium.
After the introduction to Praagh’s spiritual life, and sharing his first sightings of ghosts, he shares stories of people who’ve experienced NDE (near death experience) and wishes to enlighten us about both, the complexities and simplicity of the ghostly side of life.
Praagh informs us that there is no such thing as death, but only transition, it is only the end of the physical body. He tells us there is no pain when someone dies, nobody ever dies alone, for as we pass out of our bodies, our deceased loved ones are their to greet us. Praagh tells us that those who experienced near death situations all concur with similar experiences told by those who’ve ‘come back’.
Most observed themselves floating out of their bodies and watching from above what was going on, feelings of overwhelming peace, moving toward a tunnel with a light ahead, being greeted by deceased loved ones, an encounter with an angel or being of light, began experiencing their life review. Some went reaching the borderline where you can’t cross over, only to be sent back into their body with great reluctance, and regrets of not realizing the truth about life while they were alive, realizing the lessons failed to learn on earth. When a person sheds its physical form, the silver cord that keeps the etheric body attached to the soul is severed. That is the end of life on earth, but not necessarily end of life in a new realm.
In this book we will learn about the different realms we venture through once we are on the other side. We’ll learn about lowly ghosts too who never evolve and remain on the lower realm without graduating to higher realms. We learn that it takes a lot of energy for a ghost to make anything manifest on a physical level. The more willing we are to open ourselves up to spirit, the more spirits will reveal themselves to us. And the biggest reason ghosts have for wanting to reveal themselves is to help console grieiving family. Apparently, after death, our lost loved ones ‘stay around’, wanting to let family know they are still ‘very much alive’, just on another realm.
Later in the book, the author talks about how ghosts like to make contact, as Praagh offers various methods of how we can protect ourselves to avoid attracting lowly spirits.
Praagh gives us some wonderful insights and stories to elaborate on his discoveries. If you’re curious about what happens in the ‘afterlife’, read this book.

This topic is so fascinating as who hasn’t thought about what happens to us after we die. I don’t profess to have any inside knowledge. I just know it would be highly disappointing if we got to the end and find out, “that’s it?” I can’t say “I’m dying to find out” (pun intended), but I’m definitely curious. I like the notion of being greeted by those who have gone before us.

Yes, I’m interested in the afterlife, but it doesn’t include ghosts. I’m sure the fantastic cover is a good indication of its contents. Thanks for sharing your review. Debby!

I find the whole concept fascinating Debby.. I have a thing about houses and we have not bought what looks like perfectly maintained attractive homes because I felt uncomfortable inside. I am convinced there is more to life and death.. Terrific review..♥♥

Thanks for the review, Debby. I’ve read other books like this, and the similarity is heartening. The experience seems universal. I’m certainly open to it. After my brother Dan was murdered, I visited a person like Praagh, and it was comforting to know that Dan was okay despite the trauma. But what I really wanted was my own experience, my own personal message from Dan… with my very own eyes and ears and written in ink! 🙂 That has never happened, so I go on faith that we are so much more than we seem. This sounds like a lovely book.

I too would love to see a good Medium, but like you, I want more from them so I won’t go to one until someone I know recommends a good one. And although, it is true that sometimes spirit won’t speak, so that doesn’t necessarily mean the Medium you went to wasn’t accurate. That whole world above is an eternal mystery. Hugs ❤

A fascinating subject Deb, I have read a few books about the transition and I often wonder if we could remember where we were when we come back. It is interesting to note that this book talks about ghosts too! BUT nobody knows the truth, as all opinions seem to be based on imagination. Thanks for sharing your lovely review.

Hi Debby, this sounds like a very interesting book. I have never had any experiences with ghosts or anything else relating to the afterlife. I do believe in faith though. I am currently reading Divine Comedy and it is also fascinating.

This sounds fascinating, Debby. What you said of James Van Praagh’s younger years reminded me of the ‘I see dead people’ boy in the Sixth Sense. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when we die – just not too soon.

This sounds fascinating. I try to be open, but I’ve never seen a spirit (that I know of), except for one experience at my sister’s house. I definitely think there are people who are more sensitive to spirits than others. I just wish I could be one of them.

This book describes much of what the Tibetan Book of the Dead, describes when traveling from this life into the next—the Bardo. The Buddhists discuss ghosts in detail, accepting them as part of the transition. This was an excellent review. Did the book answer any of your questions, or are you hungry for more information?

I’ve not heard of this fascinating book nor the author! I absolutely am a believer and have had experiences with spirits (most unwanted). Especially as a child…I had visitors. Not fun. However, I don’t typically tell people about these things because well, I don’t want them to think I’m crazy LOL. Seriously though, I really appreciate your review, Deb. I’ll be adding this one to my TBR shelf.

Hi Debby – what an interesting author and book … I’m sure there are people with us all the time … my mother seemed to experience them in her last few years on occasions – mostly family. I’d love to know there’s continuance – I want to find out what happened centuries ago, and what will happen as the future unfolds.
