The Face of Empathy

I’m reblogging my post from our Sisters of the Fey blog on empaths and how to recognize if you are one.

Are you an empath? Do you know which attributes tell you you’re an empath?

This article is quite informative and accurate with the 9 signs listed below that help you identify with being an empath. I was born an empath so I can relate to all these signs. Can you relate to any of them?

Some people misconstrue the definitions of empathy and sympathy. Below are the definitions of these two words explained from Meriam Webster’s Dictionary.com

Spell Syllables

the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing
 of the feelings, thoughts,
or attitudes of one another.

the imaginative ascribing to an object, as natural object or work
of art, feelings or attitudes present in oneself.
(By means of empathy, a great painting becomes a mirror of the self.)

Spell Syllables
nounplural sympathies.

harmony of or agreement in feeling, as between persons or on
the part of one person with respect to another.

the harmony of feeling naturally existing between persons of like
tastes or opinion or of congenial dispositions.

the fact or power of sharing the feelings of another, especially in
sorrow or trouble; fellow feeling, compassion, or commiseration.

You’ve probably heard the word empath thrown around carelessly and perhaps thought it had something to do to with clairvoyance or psychic abilities. You might have even thought it was a gift of some sort and that empaths were few and hard to find.

You’re wrong. Empaths live among us daily. They are the friends who can’t watch a movie that contains violent scenes, she is the shy friend who somehow always makes you feel better when you talk to her, she is the rest caring nurse who took care of you in the hospital, she is your annoying little sister who always hovering around and trying to take care of you.

Empaths are people who have a great amount of compassion and care and have the ability to feel the pain of others as though it were theirs. They are also known by their immeasurable amount of love and care.

With all of these responsibility placed on empaths by their gifts, they easily get tired and are vulnerable to selfish psychopathic people who drain them more and more till there’s nothing left.

9 Signs that show a person is Empathic

1. Sensitivity

Empaths have this uncanny way of drawing out negative feelings and replacing them with happy light-hearted feelings sometimes without the person knowing. They just realize that they feel better about what’s going on in their lives. They also know how to help people get past their negative feelings about themselves and making them feel good about themselves. So, if you have that one friend who always manages to make you feel better, now you know why. Continue Reading . . .

  1. This is very interesting. I’m heading over to read the rest of the article. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Vashti! 🙂 xx

  2. That is interesting. I have always thought an empath was from science fiction. Yikes–I am so wrong!

    1. Wow. That is interesting. 🙂

  3. I’ll head over to read the rest of this. Thanks for sharing, Debby.

    1. Thanks Stevie. 🙂 x

  4. What an interesting post, Debby. I suspect that there are a lot of empaths out there. Are we born that way or is it just the right combination of nature and nurture (including the right amount of pain). Fascinating. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. Thanks Diana. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I’ve found there are quite a few empaths around just from this post’s comments. It wouldn’t surprise me if many writers are empaths! 🙂 x

      1. It would make sense since we need to be able to enter the emotional worlds of our characters. 🙂

        1. I think so for some, or many of us Diana. But I don’t think all writers are empaths. Although we will never know. But like tends to attract like and I think many in our circles have the gift (or the curse) LOL 🙂 x

  5. I love this post, Deb. Being an empath is challenging but can be very rewarding ❤

    1. Thanks T. It does have its benefits too! And you would know well! <3 xxx

  6. This is an excellent post, dear Debbie… I have always thought that an empath was a clairvoyant… But now I have a bigger picture… Interesting!… I feel I have an ability to know when someone is lying, BTW 🙂 … The section “How to avoid getting hurt as an Empath” resonated with me… I have learnt not too give too muhc of myself and feel drained afterwards. I am not implying I am an empath… But,maybe that a few of those attributes could define my way of being… sensitivity, above all.
Hugs & happy new week <3

    1. I’m glad this article helped you sort out your view on being and empath Aqui. You may well have empathetic qualities! And regardless whether or not you are an empath, I’m happy to learn that you have managed to find a way not to get sucked in! <3

  7. You are an empath my buddy, as well as being a unicorn. <3 Xxxxxxx

    1. Lol, you are so cute Jane. As I can sense you are most definitely one too!!!! Huge flowing hugs! xoxo <3

  8. I also wanted to say that the term empath is bandied about as much as narcissist. It helps to have a balanced understanding of both terms. Xxxxx <3

    1. Thank you Jane. I wholeheartedly agree with you. <3 xxxxx

  9. Thanks for this share Deb. I read the whole post and I’m certain I am an Empath. I have been taken advantage of many times. I’ve only learned in the last decade how to reduce the sacrifices I make for others and how to ask for help when I need it. Also, I have to say that it is likely narcissists are attracted to empaths and seek them out. Great topic!

    1. Thanks Lis. I’m not surprised to hear you’re an empath. Interesting thought about narcissists. My mother was one and she knew how to work me all my life so I’m inclined to agree with you. 🙂 x

  10. So interesting, Debby!

    1. Thanks Jennie 🙂

      1. You’re welcome, Debby. 🙂

  11. Brilliant Post Debbie and so love it and that you shared it right now.. And no coincidence that your post jumped out at me as I attend to my comments,as I dive back into the world of blog .. and I will look forward to reading the full post once I catch up with my readers comments..
Sending HUGE amounts of Love to you, Feeling brighter, having painted, and shed that which needed to be shed.
Love and Blessings and BIG BIG Hugs <3

    1. Oh yay Sue, I’m glad you are back in the ‘light’. Every once in awhile we need to retreat into something that lifts us and you do that so well!
Love and hugs flowing back to you my beautiful friend. <3 xoxo

      1. And to you dear Debby xx Happy Smiles x

  12. I know I m one! Yikes! Causes me some problems from time to time. I cry over the news every night – so much tragedy! I feel too much at times. But can’t help it. I have always been like this all my life. I always tried to help the underdogs even if they didn’t want to be helped! 😂 Read the article and enjoyed it, Debby. Nicely done! I know you are one too! 🤗 💕

    1. I have no doubts you are one Janice. I too cry easily at a Hallmark commercial, lol! That’s because we can feel what is emitted to us – the marl of an empath! <3 <3 Thanks Janice. :) xx

  13. So here I am, trying again using Chrome, and… guess what? It works!

    1. Well what do you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂

  14. Interesting post, Debby. That’s quite a list of characteristics. I recognise many of them in you, and a few in myself. I am always amazed at how many people want to tell me their life story the minute they meet me. 🙂

    1. Me too! I am certain you too have ‘the gift’ Norah. 🙂

      1. I do feel deeply, and empathise with others, that’s for sure. But I’m not certain I meet all the characteristics – maybe next lifetime.

        1. Don’t under estimate yourself. 🙂

          1. Thank you, Debby. I have a habit of doing that. 🙂

  15. A lovely article, Debby

    1. Thanks Robbie 🙂

  16. I’m definitely an empath. Empaths have to be especially careful because narcissists look at us and see prey.

    1. Absolutely! And we both would know this! 🙂
