Writer’s Tips – Plagiarization, Signing Contracts, and Book Covers

For this week’s edition of Writer’s Tips, I found some helpful and informative articles around the web on how to deter copyright thieves from our writing, caveats when signing contracts, and a wonderful article from Andrew Joyce, guest writing at The Story Reading Ape’s blog on why it’s important to have a great book cover.

By now I’m sure most of you know how important a book cover is for selling books. I’d say that the three most important things in getting someone to plunk down cold hard cash for one of your books are: 1) word of mouth, 2) your book cover, and 3) your blurb. However, you’re not going to get any word of mouth unless you first sell a few books, and to do that you’ll need to have a dynamite and unique cover … and a great blurb. But the cover has to come first. .

Smorgasbord Health Column – Guest Writer – D.G. Kaye – What I did Yesterday — Besides Having a #Colonoscopy | Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

Sally Cronin is running a new series called #Potluck. Sally has been running her ‘posting from the archives’ series whereby bloggers submit some of their older posts to Sally to have featured and given fresh eyes, but in this series, Sally has requested permission to search through our archives and choose what she’d like to share from us. I had to laugh when Sally chose my post on preparing for #colonoscopy. LOL. Enjoy!

Smorgasbord Health Column – Guest Writer – D.G. Kaye – What I did Yesterday – Besides having a #Colonoscopy

D.G. Kaye.. Debby Gies has updated her post from 2015 on her experience with a colonoscopy which was repeated last week. It is one of those things that people are reluctant to talk about, but needs to be demystified and discussed.

What I did Yesterday — Besides Having a #Colonoscopy by D.G. Kaye

As I was digging through some older posts, I came across this one I wrote 4 years ago after a colonoscopy and before another one was to come, and I’ve had a few more since that time.

Although this post is quite humorous in parts, colonoscopy is serious business. We all dread them, and if you’re anything like me, worse than the actual procedure is the poison prep we have to drink the day prior to the test. In this post I share some of the humorous findings I came across while searching out alternative methods to getting the guck down, but no matter how you slice it, a beast is still a beast, even with lipstick.

Since the time of this posting, I have managed to find the potion of lesser evil that actually works for me, but everyone’s system is different so what works for some may not be as effective for others. Just remember, having a colonoscopy can literally save your life. So many people who have them have had polyps found and removed in routine checks which could ultimately have led to colon cancer left unchecked. So put on your big girl/boy pants, choose your potion and do yourself and your families a favor and get yourselves checked!

Colonoscopy – An ugly word, with fearful connotations.

Yesterday I went for my overdue colonoscopy appointment. When I say overdue, I mean that it’s been three and a half years since my last one, and consequently, that was my first one.

After having my first one and enduring the awful, but not most awful of all the preps, I was lectured then by the gastroenterologist because I didn’t take the prep she instructed me to take, . . . please continue reading

Clearing with Selenite – The Sisters of the Fey

Today I’m sharing my latest post at our Sisters of the Fey blog, where we share articles about all things spiritual and magical. I wrote this article on how to use the stone Selenite to help with clearing bad energy as a follow up post to my earlier post on how to do Empathic Clearing.

Clearing with Selenite

TODAY I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE CRYSTAL – SELENITE. YOU MAY REMEMBER I MENTIONED THIS STONE IN MY LAST POST ON ENERGY CLEARING. SO TODAY I THOUGHT I’D FOLLOW UP THAT POST WITH GETTING MORE INTO THIS WONDERFUL TOOL FOR CLEARING.

WHAT IS SELENITE?

Selenite is part of the quartz family, a crystalized form of gypsum, often referred to as ‘liquid light’. Selenite has the ability to open our crown, third eye and higher chakras, making it an excellent tool to use with any spiritual cleansing.

Selenite is found in quite a few countries such as: Greece, Mexico. and the U.S.A.. It is associated with the moon’s lunar cycles, originally named for the Greek Goddess Selene.

HEALING PROPERTIES

Selenite is known for its connection with our third eye chakra. Light energy radiates through this stone, promoting honesty and purity, forcing the holder of the stone to become open and receiving, thus helping with clearing energy blocks by allowing energy fluidity to promote raised awareness. Selenite is a wonderful divination tool for connecting with spirit guides and guardian angels. Wearing Selenite jewelry is helpful to ward off receiving negative energies and keeps the energy sucking vampires from stealing our energy.

HOW TO USE

A good piece of Selenite to use for clearing is in the form of a wand. Wands typically are about 6 to 8 inches long. The wand has more than one use. You can create a space for yourself where you like to spend time and place the wand along side any other tumbled crystals you have that you feel empowers you in a dish or a bowl and keep them near to keep good energy in the room. The wand will keep your other stones charged at the same time because Selenite is a self-cleansing stone and has the energy to cleanse other stones. Therefore, you wouldn’t have to keep cleansing your stones after taking in negative energies if the Selenite were on top of the other stones.

You can use the wand to help with meditation. Make sure one end points toward your crown chakra and the other to the root chakra (vertically), then begin your chosen mantra.

One of the best uses for this wand is for removing negative energies on your person by holding the wand and circling it around your body from head to toe. Again, hold the wand vertically and begin by circling around the top of your head and continuing downwards the length of your body down to the feet. This is known as brushing because the energy cleansing wand picks off the negativity energy that has clung to us, almost like a lint brush.

You can purchase Selenite in many forms. Some common forms are in chunks, long bars and smaller stones. Some people like to keep chunks of Selenite in some corners of a room to keep good energy or place smaller pieces on window sills. Keeping a piece under your bed is said to promote better sleep and recharge yourself.

HOW TO CLEANSE SELENITE

Selenite is known as a self-cleansing stone, and has the power of cleansing other stones when Selenite is placed upon or beside them. But, like anything else, it still doesn’t hurt to cleanse your Selenite stones once in awhile if you wish, especially if you’ve been using it a lot to clear. There are two ways to cleanse Selenite. You can light a sage smudgestick and wave it over the stone or you can cleanse it like you would any other stone by leaving it on a window sill for a day to recharge by sun and moonlight. But never use another common method that is effective for many other stones by using water. Selenite is a porous stone and it must be kept away from water.

In conclusion, you can choose to place a piece of Selenite wherever you feel you need to keep good energy flowing. Below I’ve included a great short video from the Energy Muse, which will give you a good idea of what Selenite looks like and how to use it to clear negative energy.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – The Travel Column with D.G. Kaye – Puerto Vallarta, #Mexico Part Two – Renting, Shopping, Tipping and Water | Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

Welcome to this month’s edition of my Travel Column. Last month in my column, I shared a bit of history on beautiful Puerto Vallarta as well as some tips on dining, beaches, and things to do. For this month’s edition I’m going to share some tips based on my personal experience on notable places to visit while there, what to pack, caveats of renting a condo, and protocol on some of the Mexican customs.

suitacase

What to pack?

Pack for summer temps. Keep in mind that nights can be breezy so you may want to throw in a few long-sleeved Tees and/or a light sweater.

As usual, I bring too many shoes and basically end up wearing the same two pairs when going out. During the day you will live in flip flops or sandals. When walking any distances, and when walking downtown you will want to have comfortable shoes on. Trust me! The downtown zone still has cobble stone roads. Heels aren’t going to be your friend there. I acquired a new affection for FitFlops after buying a pair to take with me before I left. I plan on getting a 2nd pair and that’s all I really need to wear out. They are ultra-comfortable and very stylish, they even have styles with bling – and that’s good enough for me, lol. Of course, you will want to have a pair of sneakers too.

I mostly live in my bathing suit and cover-up by day and a sundress or a pair of capris and a top by night. I don’t see many people wearing long pants even at night so don’t fill your suitcases with them as they will likely just be taking up space and never worn. The jeans I wear on the airplane are the only long pants I take.

Don’t forget to pack your favorite pillow. If you’re anything like me and are fussy about your pillows, you will be happy you brought yours. See if you can find a smaller travel version of your favorite pillow like I’ve found, which will take up less space in your bags. And don’t forget the essentials: sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

Thinking of renting a condo in PV?

If you’re interested in renting a place for your vacation in PV, I’m sharing my list of how to go about the process, what to look for, and things to beware of:

There are plenty of online sites where one can find places for rent in PV, and many property managers who look after several properties can also be found on various websites. But if you’re not familiar with where to begin, my recommendation is to look on VRBO and Air BnB.

One thing that is almost certain is that all rental prices are expected in US dollars. Depending on which service you book through, prices will vary so it’s important to do your homework and check similar offers for similar same sized properties around same locations.

Every place for rent seems to have their own different terms of contract. Some will ask for 50% down and the balance due 2 months prior to arrival, some will only require 20% deposit and balance payable on arrival (those are the only terms I rent a place with), while some offer rebates if you must cancel and some don’t.

It’s important to do an internet check when renting to make sure you’re renting from someone reputable. It’s not difficult to type a name of someone or the name of a condo complex in a Google search bar and take it from there. TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Yahoo are also great places to check reviews from previous fellow travelers who will share their experiences. Personally, I prefer renting directly from owner as opposed to a manager, but there are exceptions. I like to call that person to gather information rather than rely solely on what’s written on the description. This also allows me to get a good feel of the person I intend to rent from.

Make sure you ask about ‘added fees’ such as: security deposit required, clean-up fees, and oddly, some funky other mysterious fees I’ve seen around. If someone is paying for an ad, they should have photos and a good description of the property and surrounding areas.

In Mexico, it seems that electricity is often a separate charge on top of the rental fee. Rarely will you find it included in the price. Depending on the honesty of the person you’re renting from you’ll end up paying anywhere from $50 US per month to exorbitant money grab rates as high as $200 a month. Always ask!

Ask about these rules of the property:  . . . Continue reading
