Life is like a cup of tea

This week’s Poetry Challenge for Tanka Tuesday at Colleen Chesebro’s blog, Colleen gave us two words – Plan and Finish. The rules state we must include synonyms for those two words in the poem. My two words are ‘scheme‘ and ‘end‘.

I chose to write about a newly coined phrase taken from Bob Woodward’s new best-seller – Fear – “There’s a war on truth”.

 

“There’s a war on truth”

Don’t be fooled by schemes and lies

Listen and observe

Intent – deceive and confuse

Endgame – justice soon prevails

War on truth

THE RULES

For Colleen’s Weekly Poetry Challenge, you can write your poem in one of the forms defined below. Click on the links to learn about each form:

HAIKU IN ENGLISH 5/7/5 syllable structure. A Haiku is written about seasonal changes, nature, and change in general.

TANKA IN ENGLISH 5/7/5/7/7 syllable structure. Your Tanka will consist of five lines written in the first-person point of view. This is important because the poem should be written from the perspective of the poet.

HAIBUN IN ENGLISH Every Haibun must begin with a title. Haibun prose is composed of short, descriptive paragraphs, written in the first-person singular.

The text unfolds in the present moment, as though the experience is occurring now rather than yesterday or some time ago. In keeping with the simplicity of the accompanying haiku or tanka poem, all unnecessary words should be pared down or removed. Nothing must ever be overstated.

The poetry never tries to repeat, quote, or explain the prose. Instead, the poetry reflects some aspect of the prose by introducing a different step in the narrative through a microburst of detail. Thus, the poetry is a sort of juxtaposition – different yet somehow connected.

Senryu in English 5/7/5 syllable structure. A Senryu is written about love, a personal event, and have IRONY present. Click the link to learn the meaning of irony.

 

I will give you two words. Choose synonyms from those words for your poetry. You, the poet, now have more control over the direction of your writing. Follow the rules carefully. Don’t use the prompt words.

  4. Excellent poem.. Wise words… and we should all of us begin to Listen well and observe… And not take things we are told as face value.. But seek deeper and find out your own Truth of a situation..
    The problem with today’s world there are so many who repeat ‘gossip’ not knowing if it is truth or not…
    Understand also that its not just people we may know who are deceitful but those whom we trust in ruling our nations often do not know how to tell the truth for they have believed their lies for so long..

  11. What a powerful Tanka, Debby with a strong point to make, made even clearer with the wonderful image you chose to support it. We live in scary times. It’s difficult to know what to believe. Sometimes all we know is that someone is lying. But who?
