Are You Using #Universal #Links for your Books?

share me

Authors, are you using universal links for your books? If you’re not using universal links with your books, you’re most likely missing out on having many more potential readers.

What is a universal link?

When selling your books on Amazon.com, and posting the link for that book when promoting, it will take the reader directly to Amazon.com. Now that’s great that you have an interested reader to view your book, but what if they want to purchase it and they don’t live in the U.S.? They’d have to manually go to the Amazon site which corresponds to their own country to purchase that book, and this added step may have already lost their interest. Here are a few good reasons:

  • The reader may not be tech-savvy and may not know the correct URL for their country’s Amazon page.

  • They may not be too familiar with the ‘Googling’ process either, causing them to go no further to bother finding out how to get the book.

  • There are also readers who have short attention spans and may not be willing to go through hoops just to find the book page, or waiting for pages to load.

Enter, the universal book link. There are a few sites widely used by self-published authors where you can create a dedicated URL to each of your books, By linking your book to these newly created, specific to the book URL’s, it enables the reader to land directly on the Amazon page of their own country. Once there, they can have a further look at the book and click to purchase without having to search for the intended page.

Two popular sites (there are a few more less commonly used) for creating a universal book link are booklinker.net and smarturl.it.

I use smarturl.it for my books. Each time I promote my books, I use the links I’ve created, whether it’s for a promotional ad, here on my blog, or on social media. That way I don’t have to worry about whether or not a potential buyer is getting confused where they’ve landed.

Capture smaeturl

All you have to do is enter the default URL of your book for example, my book: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HDTPPUQ then below, in country destinations, add the other countries Amazon has their site on, eg: .ca, .co.uk. plus your book name, dp, and asin after  each country, eg: http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00HDTPPUQ (for Canada) and the book linking site will make one universal link for all of those available pages with one common URL. The new link for that book now begins with ‘smarturl.it’ and you choose the end of the URL. The book listed above is my book, Conflicted Hearts, my new link I use for it is http://www.smarturl.it/bookconflictedhearts   . If you clicked the first Amazon.com link I shared, it will take you to my book on the .com page. If you now click the last link above, you will land on your country’s page.

To obtain all 15 country URL’s Amazon sells on, I’m linking HERE to a most interesting post I recently read from the Kindlepreneur.com. Not only will you find the 15 Amazon countries, but this post explains the importance of creating new links to use for promotion. One very good reason in particular is, by using a different link, your reviews are less likely to be deleted; a common problem authors are finding lately when they choose to review a book of an acquaintance, and Amazon deems the review as biased.

I’m also linking to an older post I came across at ebooksuccess4free   Although it’s an older post, the info is still current, (other than the 3 newest countries added by Amazon since then), and if you read it, you will note why that blogger also prefers  using smarturl.it.

For more information on how to set up your links, you can read instructions on how to set up your permanent links at  booklinker.net or  smarturl.it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

NOTE: My friend and author, Dan Alatorre brought up an important point that I overlooked including here. I’m including his comment  below. Dan adds another bonus of making your own links is that you can check on your links to see where the clicks came from:

“This is huge, and I don’t do it enough. Another reason to use global links is TRACKING. Say you run two promotions at the same time and sell a lot of books. Which promo worked? Wouldn’t you like to know that one sold 99% of your books and the other sold none? Using a global link can do that because it shows which clicks came from where. Then you can have a second promo where the benefit was received and NOT waste money. That’s huge.”

My newest book Meno-What? A Memoir is also available on Amazon, still only in ebook version. For those of you waiting for the paperback (and thanks for asking), I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival in the post for my proof copy before I hit publish on Createspace and have been informed I should have it by this Friday. So assuming everything looks good, I am hoping to have the paperback available to order by Friday June 27th. I know some of you have been kindly asking where they link was on my Meno-What? page here so you could purchase from that direct link to help me get my ‘ransom’ money out from Createspace (see this post http://wp.me/p3UZVY-Ku)  for early sales before it goes direct with Amazon, and as soon as I okay the proof for publishing I will post it here and make the link available on my Meno-What? page. Thank you all for your interest. 🙂

DISCOVERING NEW BOOKS — I’ve been Tagged!

blog tag

Hello readers! I am excited to share that I was invited to participate in  a blog chain. I was invited by a fellow author friend Alana Munro. Alana has kindly tagged me and my book Conflicted Hearts. She is the best selling author of Women Behaving Badly. A book I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the misbehaviors of women and their petty jealousies.

women behaving

Description:

Have you ever been hurt by a woman? Are you fed up with the constant bitching,
gossiping and manipulation between the females in your life? Do you want happier
and healthier relationships with females? Do you wish to weed out the toxic
women and seek out only positive women?

If you have ever wondered why
some women are complicated creatures this book will offer you straight talking
answers. This book will highlight all the strange, controlling and spiteful
behaviours that some females specialise in. This book attempts to understand
what actually drives women to be cruel or bitchy to each other. It attempts to
make sense of the huge expectations women place on each other. How can we avoid
toxic women? What bad behaviours should we be looking out for? This book
explores every cruel behaviour possible and attempts to understand what is
really going on between the females in our life.

Congrats on your book’s success Alana and thanks for sharing my work.

Now as part of this blog, I am to answer four questions:

1.  What are you currently working on?

I have just finished writing the first draft for my next book, a humorous take on my menopausal experience. I am also working on an anthology of short essays on things that girls love which encompasses vanity and our love for accessories. I am also in the beginning stages of writing a sequel to my first book, Conflicted Hearts. My plate is full!

2. How does your work differ from other’s in same genre?

I am a nonfiction writer and all my writing comes from my own life experiences. My first book was a memoir based on my dysfunctional childhood and narcissistic mother and my journey into the world alone to discover life on my own. I suppose there are many memoirs written but each individual has their own journey to share and the lessons that come with it.

3. Why do you write what you do?

I have always written about my feelings on life and my experiences and kept a journal for years on such. By writing I get to express my true feelings and at the same time it is so freeing to get the words out of my head and onto paper. I have found through the years that people are interested in what I have to say so I decided to take my writing more seriously and share my thoughts with the world.

4. How does your writing process work?

I write in long-hand. Some may call this ‘old school’ but I cannot sit in front of a keyboard and create. My mind is always thinking and I have several notebooks which I write in pertaining to different subjects and for the books I am currently writing. I do an outline of chapters I’d like to write about for each book and then I discipline myself to just sit down and write. Sometimes the course I have laid out for myself gets sidetracked and ideas begin to take on another path other than the one I had planned but that is all part of the writing process. Only when I have completed first draft do I begin to enter it into the computer and then that is where all my revisions take place. Although I do print out several copies along the way because I find it so much easier to read and revise off paper.

Now that I have shared some insights into my writing, I am going to introduce you to three other authors that I am tagging.

*Please note, if you have been tagged, please answer the above questions and introduce your followers to the person who has tagged you plus you must tag three other authors who you choose to have their work recognized.

I would like to introduce author JM Bushnell. Her debut book is Manual Exposure.

Description:
In 1977, when the New York Times declared that the television mini-series Roots was the “most significant civil rights event since the Selma-to-Montgomery march of 1965,” its author, Alex Haley became America’s newest “folk hero. ”
His book was on the Times’ Best Seller’s list for months, and won the Pulitzer Prize. His story had captivated a nation and then the world. From Idaho to Israel, it seemed everyone was caught-up in “Rootsmania.”
Alex Haley was on his way to becoming the most successful author in the history of publishing. That’s when his troubles began.
Within a decade and a half following the publication of Roots, Haley managed to alienate most of his fellow writers and at the same time squander most of his wealth.  When he died at the age of 70, his estate was auctioned off and his iconic book went out of print.
What happened?
Based on interviews of Haley’s contemporaries, personal correspondence, legal documents, newspaper accounts, Adam Henig investigates the unraveling of one of America’s most successful yet enigmatic authors.

And last but not least I would like to introduce Stephanie Lahart, author of Overcoming Life’s Obstacles. The first of her two books.

Bittersweet – Murphy’s Law

law

A few months back, I wrote a post on “Murphy”, my pet name for his origin is Murphy’s law. Murphy has a tendency to show up in my life at most inopportune times, hence the name, so of course it would be inopportune!

Murphy has been circling my orbit for the past two weeks. I have tried to ignore him and refused to acknowledge that it was once again my turn in the universe to be graced with his presence. I know when he’s around, he’s like Santa; he sees you when you’re sleeping.

In these past two weeks, things around my house have been mysteriously breaking down or malfunctioning. Communications have had SNAFU’s and anything I was trying to accomplish was being time-sucked by distractions and mishaps which I had to attend to. One day my Lazy Susan cupboard or ‘the magic cupboard’ as my cabinet maker who designed it named it when I bought and renovated my house completely last year, wouldn’t open more than 8 inches for me to get into it to access my various cooking ingredients. I suppose Susan lived up to her name. That was the week of the Polar Vortex and I need not go into what that weather situation entailed after the great ice storm. Coincidentally at that time my gas fireplace conveniently died. And of course that happened on a Friday night so it couldn’t get serviced until Monday which again turned into Tuesday because people whose furnaces broke down took precedence over fireplaces. The repair man finally came, made it work but found no known reason to man why it didn’t work.

Two weeks ago I went to my mailbox in anticipation of finding my Conflicted Hearts books there, only to wipe out on the icy sidewalk and sprain my ribs and upper arm…and no books! Yesterday in the middle of checking back and forth at my sales rank on amazon during my first KDP promotion, my laptop CRASHED…AGAIN! That would be two hard drive crashes in 5 months. Can this even happen? I spent two hours on the phone (instead of writing) with Dell tech support, chewing them out for a crappy product while trying to analyze the problem. Another thing that got me steamed about the already aggravating situation was they informed me that they would come an repair and put in a new hard drive for me but they were taking the old one with them. WHOA!  I said, “What?” Apparently if I don’t let them have the old one, I would be charged $80.00! “Are you kidding me?”, I questioned in a not so friendly tone. “I’m not giving you guys my whole personal world in that hard drive, that’s invasion of privacy,” I added. I thought the crash was enough punishment. They patiently replied that they don’t look at my information. So what the heck do they need it for! I thought when I bought the darn thing with all its components that it belonged to me. Why is their property? What is this world coming to? So my choice became give up the hard drive or pay. I was steamed So I ventured out to my local business depot today and took the dead machine over so they could swipe off all my info and paid them twenty bucks. I sure wasn’t going to give them my life on it.

In the midst of my mayhem, I was eagerly watching my author rank and downloads during my promo and I was so elated that my book Conflicted Hearts, made #1 in the top free NonFiction/Memoir category. It was a thrilling end to a crappy day. So as the saying goes — There is a silver lining!                   Screenshot 2014-01-10 18.41.18

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who participated in getting my book and I hope you all enjoy it and if you did, please write a review on amazon because that is how our books get pushed up into visibility. I also want to thank many of my friends here for helping to spread the word for me and a special thanks to Diane Tibert for doing a lovely post about my book on her website for me.
