How to transfer your #wordpress blog from .com to .org
How to transfer (migrate) your wordpress blog from .com to .org on your own. Step by step outlined with pics.
I’ve often heard writers and bloggers question whether or not to move their WordPress.com blogs over to self-hosting with a WordPress.org blog. The dilemma is that we are always concerned we are going to lose all of our posts and hard work in the process, and many of us (like myself) don’t know exactly what’s involved in the process. So today I am sharing a post from Elena over at Living with Batman. In her post she points out the benefits to moving over to self-hosted, as well as gives us great detailed play-by-play action on how to go about moving.
I’ll add here that when I moved my blog over from WordPress.com, I had someone do it for me. After I moved, some of you may remember the numerous issues I had with glitchy things I encountered with Wordpress. Because I had hired someone to set up my website and manage it, and eventually let them go, I was left to learn about the backdoor of this blogging business. But today we have Elena to help us solve the mystery of moving over to your own WordPress blog. So without further ado, I’ll let Elena take it away . .
“I have wanted to transfer my blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org for awhile now. The more I read, the more I knew I had to do it. I just didn’t know if I could do it on my own. Well last night, I took the plunge and officially clicked the “live” button on my new, self hosted site. I am rather proud of myself for doing this on my own. I am no expert, but if I can do it, you can too.”
“I’ve successfully transferred all of my old posts and managed to migrate all of my subscribers from WordPress.com. After a few tweeks, I have redirected traffic from my old blog url to the new one as well as fixed some broken links. This is especially important to me because I thought I would have to redo all of my posts on my social media accounts. But no! If anyone clicks on an old link, it actually directs it to the proper post on the new blog! Total score!”
“Firstly, let me list some of my reasons for wanting to transfer my blog…..” Continue Reading

I did check out Elena’s post but will reply here. I changed from “wordpress.com” to simply “.com” because of the increased level of security, not the same thing as Elena is suggesting. To monetize my blog when I publish, I would simply supply links to Amazon or other sources as I’ve seen other author friends do. I have heard sad tales of writers/bloggers losing subscribers when they migrated their blogs.

Thanks for sharing this other option here Marian. Perhaps you should write a post about the procedure to share? I need to ask you though if you’re sure this isn’t the same thing we’re talking about because when you move from wordpress.com to .org, that is in fact the self hosted version with a URL added to .com, like mine is. There is no .org on the url, the self hosted is actually from the .org site. I know sounds confusing.
And about losing followers: When I moved to my self hosted, I kept the old site open for over a year with an added redirect to my new site. That way anybody still lingering and going over to the old site was automatically brought over to my new site. As time progressed and new followers joined my blog, they were signing up for the new blog. Does this help? 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing lovely! It is quite the learning curve and can be very scary but as long as you take your time, step by step, you can do it. I love being able to customize my blog and all the available plugins make me feel like a kid in a candy store!

Thanks so much for sharing this Debby, I have my own domain via WordPress but I haven’t even thought about changing to self-hosted for fear of it all going horribly wrong after all my laptop troubles of last year 😮 But I’ve bookmarked Elena’s post as you never know, I just might decide to make the jump one of these days! 🙂

That’s what I do Sherri. If something is of interest, or I know will be, I clip the article to my Evernote file! 🙂
