Just a note to let you know that any links to all the posts I’ve done since Tuesday August29th are DEAD!!!!!

 

My website crashed today, Friday Sept. 1 and my Tuesday Post with Dave Chesson is dead, my Friday post with Diana Peach is dead and all future posts I had in draft are DEAD!

 

I am going to try and rewrite all of those posts throughout the weekend so please don’t be overwhelmed if you see The Tuesday and Friday post reposted on one day. And Pleaseeeeeeee if you visit them reshare them on social media again.

 

Word of warning DO NOT UPDATE THE CAPTCHA PLUGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Thanks Terri. I’m tearing my hair out rewriting posts that were already published! The ones I had in draft are all gone except for the Word docs I have from my featured guests which I’ll be starting all over with. The worst WP nightmare. I’ll be in seclusion for most of the weekend. 😦

  5. Oh, NO! Updating plugins is dangerous, I’ve been told. It’s a Catch-22 though: Without updating, other things go wonky.

    I did comment on Diana’s post, so maybe some of that is retrievable – eventually. Did you contact WordPress via “Chat”? They have servers with backups, so maybe your situation is not as dire a it seems.

    1. It’s been a nightmare Olga. I spent over an hour on the phone with my webhost – Godaddy, I’m going to write a post about that (eventually) so others can take heed. In the end, my only option was to restore my website to an earlier date. I chose the day before the crash, Aug 31 but it decided to go back to last Sunday on its own, so anything posted after then was wiped out along with my future posts in draft.:( WP is our arch nemesis!

  8. DEB!… No worries… I am sure it´ll get fixed… I had tried to sign in your blog from a link provided on your Twitter, and didn´t work… But I tried again, less than 1 hour later and it worked… Time works in strange ways, wink! 😉 Hugs ❤

    1. Thanks my sweet friend. You actually couldn’t sign in because my site was crashed. When you finally got to, I had to restore my site to an earlier date which was set to one day before the crash but WP took the liberty of setting it back to one week ago! So I lost all this week’s work and everything in draft! I’m busy recreating now and still haven’t resolved the original issue. It sucks! Lol 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks Norah. It was a most horrendous day. No, the posts from last week are gone into the ether, all links dead. I’ve had to recreate the 2 that were posted and will be working most of the weekend recreating my next week’s posts and interview I had all set in draft. A true WP nightmare that I’ll definitely be writing about next week! 🙂 x

  13. You probable don’t want to hear it , but I hear my IT guy at work saying, “Don’t cry if you lose your work and your forgot to back it up.” I KNOW…I KNOW. I’ve been guilty of not backing up and lost my work. I just hate it.

    When I bought my current MAC, the salesman recommended and I agreed to purchase an external hard drive and use “Time Machine” to constantly backup your work. I write all my post on Word and then transfer them to my website. I know that helps protect the data, but it doesn’t help with the links to other important sites. Hugh Roberts wrote a piece a while back about a technique to backup your WordPress site. I’m not sure it that would help or not.

    All my suggestion are like closing the barn door after the cows escaped. Anyway, I’m sorry to hear your bad news.

    1. Thanks Chuck. Hugh and I often exchange our findings about keeping our blogs safe. My site is backed up nightly! The problem is if you need that back up (like I did) you have to restore to an earlier point (as I did) taking you back before you hit that update that caused the problem. Consequently, anything added to our blog after the the night before’s backup is deleted and gone. I had spent about 3 hours writing posts for the coming week the same morning I clicked the update plugin that caused the havoc, so those posts were all gone and consequently, it took the liberty of backing up to 5 days prior (not sure yet how that happened) instead of just to the day before, so all my published posts were gone to from that day. I’m posting this Tuesday on what happened and hopefully how others can avoid what I went through. Funny, I’d already linked to Hugh’s backup post in my post. 🙂

  14. Oh no, Debby, what a nightmare. So very sorry to read what’s happened. I think I’d have hit the bottle and eaten hundreds of bars of chocolate if this had happened to me. I hope you’ve caught up by now, but if there’s anything I can do to help (like sing YMCA to you), then you only have to ask.
    A couple of extra hugs have been packaged up and are on their way to you. They’re big ones, so be prepared to be knocked off your slippers.

    1. Thank you my lovely friend. Inexplicable is all I can say. Surely, the worst WP issue I’ve encountered so far. I wrote this after I finally got back into my crashed site just to fire it off for those who to know that many links to posts were dead because of this. But, if you’re interested in hearing how it all happened, stay tuned for Tuesday’s post where I wrote about the details of what happened and how I got my website back. In my tips, I also linked back to your ‘backup’ article! You should get a pingback, providing things are working, lol. Almost caught up, will finish today. I sure could have used a song from you on Friday 🙂 I can’t believe I actually cried, lol. ❤

  16. Oh Debby, what a sad state 😦 You lost all of that hard work… I’m just glad you HAD backed up your work at some point so ALL was not lost! I’ve heard horror stories of some bloggers never backing their work and then losing it all.. BUT on the positive side I’m glad to learn that it wasn’t lost due to being hacked. Hugs!! I see new posts you’ve rewritten so will share them now xo

    1. Thanks my friend. Truly a writer’s nightmare. Yes, backup!!!!!!!!!! I can’t emphasize this enough. My webhost says they do it nightly. Although when I restored to an earlier date (only one day before), the backup only brought me to a week before! This tells me they aren’t backing up nightly, which I will be investigating. So yes, I had to rewrite the lost material and 4 drafts I had ready to go for this week. A major pain. Thanks again for all your shares. So appreciated! ❤ ❤ ❤

    Clearly you are correct that GoDaddy is NOT backing nightly – unless their restore function is kludgy.

I had put this post up quickly after I regained my site back to let people know in case they were shut out from my site.   20. What a nightmare, Debby. It looks like you managed to rewrite all/most of it and are back in a good position? I for one, do not notice anything funky going on right now. I guess from now on, you will write your posts first in a Word document before copying them into the blog? 🙂
